In 2012, I was pregnant with my first son, we had another deployment coming up and a PCS scheduled for a few months later. Up until then, I had worked in television, selling advertising for NBC, FOX, CW and CBS, helping over 150 companies grow their businesses. My career proved to be highly transferable starting in Atlanta, then moving to San Diego, and then to Jacksonville, Florida. Each time, I had to start over with a new company, but I never had any issues finding a job in the industry. For eight years, I thought that was pretty amazing. I loved working and it was a very cool feeling when my marketing plans were emulated across the country.
While my husband was on shore duty, I went to school at night, after work, to get my Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing and entrepreneurship. When we decided to have a baby, I knew I wanted to find a way to still work and follow my career ambitions, but also stay home with my little one. I knew it was possible, I just had to discover how. The television station I worked for was NOT into telecommuting marketing consultants so I needed to figure this out on my own.
With a new baby, deployment looming, and an upcoming PCS, I knew my current job was not going to be sustainable. It was at that time, nine months pregnant, that I decided to start my own company.
The first business I created was an advertising agency. I took the skills I had built over the last eight years and put them to work. I contacted a business owner and asked him if he would like to hire me to do his marketing plan and media buying. He said, “YES” and I had my first client. I didn’t have a website, I didn’t have an LLC established yet, but I did have a client and revenue coming in. I grew this business from just one client to handling over one million in advertising dollars in just three years. Since then, I was able to successfully get through another deployment, move across the country, have a second child, and add more clients to my business.
Having the freedom to work from anywhere, with just a phone, laptop and internet connection, has been amazing. When my husband deployed for nine months, I was able to jet off to Dubai to meet him without having to worry about vacation days. I brought my laptop just in case a client needed me.
Because I started my own business, my life is very different now:
It wasn’t long after starting my first business that I started a second, “TheNavyMom.com”, a website for helping military spouses “find adventure wherever they are anchored.” Within 60 days of launch, I turned my blog into a local television show helping families get dialed into their new city.
After spending the last 12 years helping businesses with their marketing, and starting two companies of my own, I’ve switched my focus from serving established business owners, to helping aspiring entrepreneurs.
